Is the Avenger the worst car of our time?

I just realized that I can hardly find a “worst cars” list that does not include the Avenger/Caliber/200/Sebring. I guess the 3.6 Pentastar ones have some real scoot but otherwise, they seem pretty much universally maligned. The Mirage is also terrible but at least priced accordingly and it wasn’t styled to look like a 3/4 scale Dodge Charger with birth defects. Do they have good qualities that I’m missing?

They’re cheap and get you from A to B if you don’t give a shit about cars. I think that’s just about it.

I’ve always thought of the avenger/caliber etc... as rental/fleet cars. I know people buy them, I just don’t know why.

Yes. The late Blacktop ones looked quite good. At least compared to the early ones.

Other than that, no. Any of them without the Pentastar were gutless, they are all noisy, and that interior... they went more GM than GM with the hard plastic. Doesn’t bother me in the trucks, does bother me in any car that should have some degree of refinement. Etc etc etc.

The 2007-2010 Avenger/Sebring were probably the worst cars on the market. Impressively cheap interiors, which were usually a bland sea of medium gray or beige.

the 2011+ were much improved and apart from the 200 keeping the Sebring’s awkward proportions, shouldn’t even be mentioned in the same breath as their predecessors. at the very least, the interiors went from miserable penalty boxes to at least somewhat pleasant places to be.

They’re also a pain in the ass to work on. Likely since the chassis is the product of 4 different evolutions by 3 different companies.

I drove an avenger as a loaner car while mine was getting work done. I was completely shocked at how much body roll it had. It made me wonder if it had been in an accident and repaired poorly. Even my 1990 grand Prix didn’t have that much body roll, and that was built by guys who probably had the same mechanical skillset as Jeremy Clarkson.

The last model year Avengers with the V6 really aren't bad cars. Horrible depreciation and materials quality you'd expect, but they're decently reliable. Can be a good bargain.

A friend bought one of these as her first car right after high school. I cried every night for the terrible mistake she’d made. I cringe every single time I see one of these. It’s like the car buyer came to the dealership and said “I want something cheap and boring, and also something that looks hideous and with a Fisher Price interior.”

Depends on your Avenger.

I’ve hired this one. It was OK, as hire cars go.

I’ve been passengered in this model. Not so good, it felt as if major bits could fall off at any moment.

In a world of really no “bad” cars I would argue it is the “worst”.

I had a 3.6 pentastar Avenger rental once. it had 90,000+ miles on it, and the thing was, it wasn’t any worse with that mileage than when new. The carpet and seats weren’t even noticeably worn. The interior was uninspiring, but it appears to wear like iron. And yes, it was quick in a straight line.

Well at some point, Dodge had to decide if they were really going to give the Avenger the care it needed, or leave it to the wayside. They chose the wayside.
